Particulate Matter: Finely divided solid or liquid matter <br />other than water wh1ch 1s released into the atmosphere. <br /> <br />11. Ringlemann Chart: A chart as described by the U. S. Bur- <br />eau of Mines Inrormatlon Circular 6888 and upon which are <br />illustrated graduated shades of gray for use in estimating <br />the light obscuration power of smoke. <br /> <br />12. RinKlemann Number: The next lowest shade number on the <br />Ringlemann Chart wh1ch most nearly corresponds to the light <br />obscuration power of the smoke being measured. For example, <br />smoke opacity lying between No. 1 and No.2 shades of ~&J <br />on the Ringlemann Chart will be measured as Ringlemann No. 1 <br />smoke. <br /> <br />13. Smoke: The visible discharge from a chimney, stack, vent, <br />exhaust, or combustion process which is made up of particulate <br />matter. <br /> <br />i <br />1 <br />l <br />, i <br /> <br />14. Sound Level Meter: A sound level meter is an instrument <br />used to measure the total intensity of a sound (in decibelS) <br />without regard to its frequency composition. A sound level <br />meter that meets applicable requirements of the American Stand- <br />ards Association is suitable for use in determining complianoe <br />with this ordinance. <br /> <br />1S. .' Three-Component Measuring S:rstem: A three-component <br />measuring system is an instrument or complement of instrwnents <br />which records earthborne vibration simultaneously in three <br />mutually perpendicular directions. <br /> <br />16. Toxic and Noxious Matter: Toxic and noxious matter is aI'lJ <br />solid, liquid, or gaseoue matter, including but not limited to <br />gases, vapors, dusts, fumes, and mists which may be detrimental <br />to or endanger the health, safety, comfort, or welfare of per- <br />sons in the vicinity and/or cause injury or damage mpropert1 <br />when present in relatively small amounts. <br /> <br />17.
