<br />4. Skylights.
<br />
<br />(a). Skylights placed over shafts, vent shafts, stair enclosures,
<br />and exit ways required by sections 602 and 603, shall be glazed with
<br />glass or other noncombustible material which may be easily
<br />pierced by fire-fighting personnel. If glass is used it shall be plain
<br />glass not more than }i inch thick.
<br />
<br />(b). Skylights other than as specified above, which are in-
<br />clined less than 600 from the horizontal, hereafter placed on a
<br />building shall have the sashes and frames thereof constructed of
<br />approved noncombustible material and "glazed with wired glass or
<br />an approved plastic which dO'es not present a fragmentation haz-
<br />ard; skylights in foundries or buildings where acid fumes are
<br />present may have sashes and frames of wood by special permis-
<br />sion of the building official.
<br />
<br />(c). Every skylight in which plain glass is used shall be pro-
<br />tected by a substantial wire screen with wire not lighter than
<br />t'umber,12 gauge and having a mesh not less than ~ of an inch
<br />nor larger than 1 inch, placed not less than 4 inches or more than
<br />10 inches above the glazed portion of the skylight at all points.
<br />Such screen shall extend beyond the glazing on all sides a distance
<br />not less than the height of the screen above the glazing. When a
<br />skylight is located over a stairway, public hallway or a place of
<br />assembly, a similar screen. shall also be placed below the skylight,
<br />unless there is an intermediate ceiling light.
<br />
<br />(d). Skylights in which 'combustible plastic is used shall be
<br />constructed in accordance with the following provisions:
<br />
<br />(1). The skylight shall have a curb which is not less than 4
<br />inches in height above the adjoining roof surface,
<br />
<br />(2). The area within the curbs of each skylight shall not ex-
<br />ceed 50 square feet and no 'dimension shall exceed 10 feet. The
<br />aggregate area of skylights shall not exceed 20 percent of the
<br />floor area sheltered by the roof upon or in which they are
<br />installed.

<br />3. A plastic luminous ceiling shall conform to the require-
<br />ments for interior finish materials ~see sections 402-4, 701-8 and
<br />702-8), except that a plastic luminous ceiling, the plastic panels of
<br />which have been shown in approprHite tests by a recognized test-
<br />ing laboratory to fall from their mO{1l1ting before being ignited by
<br />application of heat shall be exempt. from this provision provided
<br />the plastic panels are made up of individual lengths not exceeding
<br />10 feet each. i

<br />4. No plastic luminous ceiling shall be installed below sprin-
<br />klers in areas required to be equippeq with automatic sprinklers by
<br />section 1702 or section 404, unless appropriate tests by a recognized
<br />testing laboratory have shown that such ceiling does not prevent
<br />effective protection by the sprinkled; or unless sprinklers are lo-
<br />cated both above and below the lumirous ceiling. .) .

<br />5. The supports for plastic panfls of luminous ceilings shall ,...-
<br />be securely fastened in an approved manner to the ceiling, floor or~'
