<br />. <br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />96-06 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE, TEXAS, AUTHORIZING <br />THE SUBMISSION OF A GRANT REQUEST TO THE STATE 01' TEXAS, TEXAS TRAFFIC SAFETY <br />PROGRAM GRANT, ACTING BY AND THROUGH THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION <br />FOR FUNDING TO THE CITY OF LA PORTE, TEXAS, FOR THE PROJECT TITLED "SAFE AND <br />SOBER WAVE". <br /> <br />WHEREAS, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY 01' LA PORTE, TEXAS, have the moral <br />obligation to the citizens and taxpayers of the City of La Porte, Texas, to <br />ensure the reduction of speeding vehicles in excess of the posted speed limit <br />and increase safety belt and safety seat usage rates through two waves of <br />enhanced enforcement and public information and education efforts; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Council feels that more police presence under this program is <br />one of the best defenses against a drunk or speeding driver; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Council is aware that the state of Texas has had a Mandatory Use <br />Law for safety belts for the past 10 years. Since that time, Texas has seen <br />safety belt use rise to among the highest levels in the country; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Council believes that implementing the use of The SAFE AND SOBER <br />WAVE PROGRAM will be highly effective in reducing traffic-related fatalities <br />and injuries to the citizens of La Porte; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the opportunity exists to fund this project through the State of <br />Texas, at no expense for salaries to the City of La Porte. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the City of La Porte, Texas, <br />that the city submit a grant request to the Texas Department of <br />Transportation, Traffic Safety Specialist, Houston District to execute the <br />funding for the SAFE AND SOBER WAVE PROGRAM. <br /> <br />PASSED AND APPROVED, this 26th <br /> <br />day of August <br /> <br />,1996. <br /> <br /> <br />, Texas <br /> <br />ATTEST: <br /> <br />L <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />Sue Lenes, City Secretary <br /> <br />I, Sue Lenes, City Secretary for the City of La Porte, do hereby certify this <br />to be a true and exact copy of the City of La Porte Resolution No. 96-06, <br />adopted by La Porte City Council, August 26, 1996. <br />
