<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 94-07 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE PLEDGING <br />SUPPORT FOR THE EFFECTIVE CONSERVATION AND IMPROVED MANAGEMENT OF <br />THE GALVESTON BAY ESTUARY AND ITS CRITICAL RESOURCES. <br /> <br />wHEREAS, the Galveston Bay System has been recognized as an <br />estuary of national significance, under provisions of the 1987 <br />federal Water Quality Act, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Galveston Bay is the largest estuary in Texas, the <br />nation's second most productive bay fishery, and is vital to the <br />local, statewide and national economies as a renowned deepwater <br />port, as a nationally significant petrochemical complex, and as a <br />premier recreational resource, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the counties surrounding Galveston Bay are home to <br />more than three million citizens who look to the Bay for <br />recreation, as a pleasant living environment, and as a valuable <br />generator of employment and income, a~d <br /> <br />WHEREAS,. recent scientific studies of Galveston Bay resources <br />and public policy studies of existing Bay management methods have <br />indicated the need for prompt, coordinated action to more <br />effectively address adverse impacts on water quality, habitat and <br />living resources, and public health, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the watershed area which drains into Galveston Bay <br />crosses the boundaries of numerous governmental jurisdictions in <br />the Houston-Galveston region and involves management of a range of <br />activities by various agencies at all levels of government, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the ecosystem protection approach developed for the <br />Bay system through the Galveston Bay National Estuary Program <br />represents the "state of the art" in environmental planning and <br />management, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the management of Galveston Bay as premier regional <br />economic and environmental asset deserves the participation of all <br />bay users and interests groups, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Galveston Bay Estuary program will be <br />administered by the state without any expense to the City of La <br />Porte <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE BB IT RBSOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LA <br />PORTB, TEXAS THAT; <br /> <br />. The City of La Porte recognizes that coordinated regional <br />management of Galveston Bay will be the most effective means of <br />aChieving the goals of the Galveston Bay Plan, and <br /> <br />.
