<br />e <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />PROCESS DESCRIPTION: <br /> <br />Contaminated groundwater from the sands underlying the La Porte site <br />will be removed. Recovery wells and interceptor trenches will collect <br />the groundwater. Pumps will transfer the contaminated water to a <br />biological treatment facility. <br /> <br />III. WASTEWATER TREATMENT <br />Project No. W-159 <br /> <br />PURPOSE: <br /> <br />The facility will remove pollutant by (1) neutralization and (2) bio- <br />logical treatment. <br /> <br />PROCESS DESCRIPTION: <br /> <br />Contaminated process wastewater, groundwater and initial flow of storm- <br />water is collected and pumped to the wastewater treatment facility. The <br />wastewater is neutralized and biologically treated to carbon dioxide, <br />nitrogen compounds, water and new cell bodies in the activated sludge <br />tanks. <br /> <br />The microorganism is recycled to the activated sludge tanks. The excess <br />solids (microorganisms) are dewatered and disposed of by incineration or <br />in a Class I Hazardous landfill on a Dow site. <br /> <br />Required conntrol facilities including laboratory facilities and process <br />instrumentation will be provided. <br /> <br />The wastewater has been ruled hazsrdous by EPA. Tanks will be used for <br />storage and treatment. <br /> <br />IV. MCB REMOVAL FROM GROUNDWATER AND WASTEWATER <br />Project No. W-160 <br /> <br />PURPOSE: <br /> <br />Monochlorobenzene will be removed from contaminated groundwater and <br />spent caustic from the polymerics unit. <br /> <br />A-2 <br />
