The population of La <br />Porte grew to 7,150 in 1970. Chemical plants and related industries expanded outside the City limits, <br />offering jobs that attracted new workers to the area. With continued growth and the annexation of <br />suburban territories in the 1980s, the town expanded to 28,000 citizens by 1990.
