~h~ ~f ~~ <br />The Fraternal Order of Eagles was founded by six competitive theater owners who gathered to solve a common problem Having solved <br />their problem, their competitiveness change to camaraderie and eventually gave birth to the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Uniting in <br />brotherhood, the Eagles fought to make necessary sociat change. The Eagles initiated Mothers Day as a national holiday. The Eagles <br />sponsored America's first workers' compensation law and provided the impetus for Social Security. They also inaugurated nationwide <br />")obs after 40" to end job discrimination based on age. <br />Today, the Fraternal Order of Eagles is proud of its many charities. The Eaglet Max Baer Heart Fund has raised millions of dollars for <br />research and education in hopes of eliminating heart disease, The Eagles and the Heart Fund have been responsible for teaching C.P.R, <br />to people across North America, and for teaching our youth about drug abuse, awareness and prevention. The boundary of the Heart <br />Fund was expanded in 1978 when medical science learned how often diabetes is associated with heart disease. It was then that the <br />Eagles' RobertW. Hansen Diabetes Ftmd was initiated In the 1998-1999 fraternal year alone, the Eagles gave over $127,500.00 in <br />grants to research and education in the fight ~ainst diabetes. <br />The Eaglea'ArtEhrmannCancerFund has contributed over <br />$20.5 million to universities, hospitals and other institutions with the <br />hope of finding a cure for this devastating disease. Many grants <br />through the fund are awarded to area hospices to give aid to terminally <br />ill cancer patients. <br />The Eagles' D.D.DunlapKldnteyFond, established in 1978, has raised over <br />$4 million to fight kidney disease. To make certain that the grants will be awarded <br />where they are most needed and will do the most good, the Eagles have enlisted the aid <br />of America's leadingmedical experts to counsel in this area. <br />The Eagles' Jimmy Durante Children's Farad was established to treat and <br />care for mentally or physically challenged children under the age of 18. It was <br />later expanded to help prevent child abuse. <br />19ie Eagles' Memorial Foundation gives aid to the children of Eagle <br />members that are military personnel, prison guards, law enforcement <br />officers, fire fighters and E.M.S. officers who have given their lives in the <br />line of duty. This includes all volunteers of these public service units. Aid <br />to these children includes educational, medical, surgical, hospital, dental <br />and optical. The children of these valiant officers are eligible for funds up <br />to their 25th birthday providing they remain full-tune students. <br />'li lie lEagfles' Q~ofl~len Eagle -A-~aeianer's Famd supports Alzheimer's <br />research centers. The Golden Eagle Furrd~sapports senior atizens programs such <br />as Meals on Wheels. Also through the Golden Eagles Fund are: 1) the Virginia <br />Turner Memorial Library Grant program which supplies large print and audio <br />books to libraries that cater to seniors; 2) the G.R.E.A.T. Fund to support local <br />police in "Gang Resistance Education And Training' ; 3) The H.O.M.E. Fund, <br />"Hands Of Many Eagles" which supports various causes not already provided <br />for by the other Eagle charity funds. <br />Throughout the history of Eagledom we have been "People Helping People:' <br />We have lobbied in Congress to assure that the rights of our neighbors and <br />communities are addressed We have raised millions of dollars for research and <br />education to some day find cures for some of the most devastating diseases of our time. <br />It is with the Eagles' "kcenness of vision" that we have become 1.2 million members <br />strong, and it is as Eagles we rise on powerful wings and take flight into this new <br />millennium. <br />
