<br />Enforcing officer means the chief building official of the city or his designated representative. <br /> <br />Family means any number of related persons or, not more than four unrelated persons living as a <br />single housekeeping unit. <br /> <br />Fence means a man made structural barrier erected on or around a piece of property or any <br />portion thereof. <br /> <br />Floor area means the sum total area of all floors as calculated from measurements to the outside <br /> <br />walls. <br /> <br />Foundation system means an assembly of materials constructed below, or partially below-grade, <br />not intended to be removed from its installation site, which is designed to support the structure and <br />engineered to resist the imposition of exterior natural forces, as defined by the Standard Building Code. <br />Such foundation system shall be skirted or enclosed with wood, or masonry to give the appearance of a <br />solid foundation, if one is not provided, compatible with the appearance of adjacent housing. <br /> <br />Freestanding sign means an outdoor sign supported by uprights or braces placed in or upon the <br />ground, or mounted on a vehicle, trailer, or mobile structure principally used for the purpose of advertising <br />or display of information. For the purpose of this chapter, a portable sign shall be considered to be a <br />freestanding sign. <br /> <br />Garage, private means an accessory building designed or used for the storage of motor vehicles <br />owned and used by the occupants of the building to which it is an accessory. <br /> <br />Garage, public means a building or portion thereof, other than a private or storage garage, <br />designed or used for servicing, repairing, equipping, hiring, selling, or storing motor driven vehicles. <br /> <br />Glare means emitted light which exceeds 60 footcandles. <br /> <br />Grade means a referenced plane representing the average of finished ground level adjoining the <br />building and all exterior walls. <br /> <br />Grand opening means the formal offering by a new business of its goods, wares, merchandise, <br />service, entertainment, or activity. <br /> <br />Greenway corridor means a publicly owned system of trails and walkways, patterned in the open <br />space and pedestrian system plan, and is designated on the land use map, park zone map, and zoning <br />map of the city, that link existing and proposed neighborhood, community, and regional parks with each <br />other and other proposed activity areas of the city. These trails and walkways, are in their majority within <br />existing right-of-way, but may be within proposed right-of-way to be acquired by the city. Greenway <br />corridors are a special use site, as said special use site is defined in the city's development ordinance, <br />section 12.07. <br /> <br />Group care facilities means residential facilities designed to provide a transition from traditional <br />treatment facilities to normal daily living for special populations such as the mentally retarded, physically <br />handicapped, or substance users. These facilities include but are not limited to half-way houses and <br />group homes. . <br /> <br />Hardship means a determination made by the zoning board of adjustment in hearing a variance <br />request in accordance with section 106-192. <br />
