<br />Street, thoroughfare means a public street designed for heavy traffic and intended to serve as a <br />traffic artery of considerable length and continuity throughout the community and so designated on the <br />city's thoroughfare plan. <br /> <br />Structure means that which is built or constructed. <br /> <br />Structure, principal means the principal structure which fulfills the purpose for which the building <br />plot is intended. <br /> <br />Substantial improvements means any repair, reconstruction, or improvement of a structure, the <br />cost of which equals or exceeds 50 percent of the market value of the structure as determined by a <br />licensed appraiser, either (a) before the improvement is started, or (b) if the structure has been damaged <br />and is being restored, valuation before the damage occurred. Substantial improvement is started when <br />the first alteration of any structural part of the building commences. <br /> <br />Temporary sign means a sign not to exceed 18 inches by 24 inches in size which is intended for <br />a limited period of display. <br /> <br />Townhouse means one of a group of no less than three nor more than 12 attached dwelling units <br />constructed in a series or group of attached units with property lines separating such units. <br /> <br />Trailer means every vehicle, with or without motive power, other than a pole trailer or ranch <br />trailer, designed for carrying persons or property and for being drawn by a motor vehicle and so <br />constructed that no part of its weight rests upon the towing vehicle. <br /> <br />Truck means any motor vehicle designed, used or maintained primarily for transportation of more <br />than nine persons or property. <br /> <br />Truck tractor means every motor vehicle designed and used primarily for drawing other vehicles <br />and not so constructed as to carry a load other than a part of the weight of the vehicle and load so drawn. <br /> <br />Used or occupied, as applied to any land or buildings, shall be construed to include the words <br />"intended, arranged or designed to be used or occupied." <br /> <br />Yard means an open space on the same building lot with a building, unoccupied and <br />unobstructed by any portion of a structure from the ground upward, except as otherwise provided. In <br />measuring a yard for the purpose of determining the width of a side yard, the depth of a rear yard, and the <br />depth of a front yard, the minimum horizontal distance between the building site and the lot line shall be <br />used. A yard extends along the lot line and at right angles or radial to such lot line to a depth of width <br />specified in the yard regulations of the zoning district in which such building lot is located. <br /> <br />Yard, front means a yard extending along the whole of the front lot line between the side lot lines, <br />and being the minimum horizontal distance between the front lot line and the front of the principal building <br />or any projections thereof other than stairs, unenclosed balconies, or unenclosed porches. In the case of <br />the lots directly adjacent to the shoreline of Galveston Bay, the front yard shall be the yard extending <br />along the whole of the lot line directly adjacent to the shoreline of Galveston Bay, and along the horizontal <br />distance between the front lot line and the front of the principal building or any projections thereof, other <br />than steps, unenclosed balconies, or unenclosed porches. <br /> <br />Yard, rear means a yard extending across the rear of a lot between the side lot lines and being <br />the minimum horizontal distance between the rear lot line and the rear of the principal building or any <br />projections thereof other than steps, unenclosed balconies or unenclosed porches. <br />
