ORDINANCE 2024-4000 <br />AN ORDINANCE RENAMING THE LA PORTE POLICE DEPARTMENT FIRING <br />RANGE THE DOUGLAS J. DITRICH FIREARMS TRAINING CENTER; PROVIDING <br />A REPEALING CLAUSE; CONTAINING A SEVERABILITY CLAUSE; FINDING <br />COMPLIANCE WITH THE OPEN MEETINGS LAW; AND PROVIDING AN <br />EFFECTIVE DATE HEREOF <br />WHEREAS, Douglas J. Ditrich, former Chief of the La Porte Police Department, passed away on <br />January 21, 2024; and <br />WHEREAS, Douglas J. Ditrich served with distinction both as an officer of the La Porte Police <br />Department, and as a citizen of the La Porte community, a place he called home from the time of <br />his initial employment with the City of La Porte in 1997; and <br />WHEREAS, the La Porte City Council desires to honor the legacy of Douglas J. Ditrich by <br />renaming the La Porte Police Department Firing Range the Douglas J. Ditrich Firearms Training <br />Center; and <br />WHEREAS, Chapter 2 "Administration' of the Code of Ordinances of the City of La Porte, Texas, <br />establishes guidelines for the naming of municipal facilities; and <br />WHEREAS, Section 2-1(c)(3) of the Code of Code of Ordinances authorizes the renaming of <br />municipal facilities "in honor of deceased local leaders" who "served in an elected or appointed <br />position of the city", and who "provided outstanding personal service that has resulted in a <br />significant and enduring contribution to the community"; and <br />WHEREAS, pursuant to the renaming policy a standing committee, composed of <br />Councilmembers from the three at -large positions (mayor, position "A," and position'B"), met <br />on July 3, 2024, to consider an application to rename the La Porte Police Department Firing <br />Range in honor of Douglas J. Ditrich, and on such date voted unanimously to present their <br />recommendation to the full City Council that the La Porte Police Department Firing Range be <br />renamed the Douglas J. Ditrich Firearms Training Center; and <br />WHEREAS, the La Porte City Council finds that Douglas J. Ditrich held an appointed position of <br />the City in his capacity of Chief of Police of the La Porte Police Department, and that during his <br />entire tenure with the La Porte Police Department, beginning with his employment in 1997 as a <br />patrolman, and through and including his time as Chief of Police, Douglas J. Ditrich provided <br />outstanding personal service that has resulted in a significant and enduring contribution to the <br />community. <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />LA PORTE, TEXAS: <br />
