<br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />FIRE DEPAR.TKENT <br /> <br />FIRE SUPPRESSION DIVISION <br /> <br />Alarm Response: <br /> <br />Fire Suppression responded to a total of 129 alarms <br />during the quarter, which is a 20.0 percent decrease over the <br />same period last year and a 20.0 percent increase over an <br />average for the last 10 years. 42 of these alarms were <br />general alarms, requiring alerting of all fire fighters. <br /> <br />The end of the quarter was also the end of the calendar <br />year. The Division responded to a total of 512 alarms for the <br />calendar year. This is a 10 percent decrease over last year <br />and a 20 percent increase over the last ten year average. <br /> <br />Several large fires occurred during the quarter with one <br />fire death. <br /> <br />Other Activities: <br /> <br />LEPC Drill - The division participated in the LEPC drill <br />with other departments as well as industry. The drill was a <br />simulated Chlorine tank car leak just north of the overpass <br />on Spencer. The division is an active participant in the <br />LEPC. <br /> <br />Ring the Bell The division participated in the <br />Salvation Army Ring the Bell as we do each year. This <br />activity not only lets us help the needy, but also to interact <br />with the public on a non-stressful level. <br /> <br />FIRE PREVENTION DIVISION <br /> <br />Investiqations: <br /> <br />Nine investigations of fires were conducted during the <br />quarter with several still being open. <br /> <br />Other Activities: <br /> <br />Smoke Detector Program for the Elderly - This program has <br />been in heavy demand this quarter due to the weather cooling. <br />The smoke detector program, which is funded entirely by area <br />businesses, is an outstanding program and a much needed <br />service to the elderly. The Fire Marshal and his staff stay <br />busy continuously installing and maintaining these detectors. <br /> <br />15 <br />
