<br />Metropolitan Area, traversed by Interstate Highways 10 and 45.
<br />Econo~ based on industry, mineral production. shipping and
<br />agriculture. 1913 cash receipts from agriculture. $39.3
<br />million, with crop production contributing $23.4 million.
<br />2.5 million pounds of milk produced in 1913. Soybeans, rice.
<br />beef cattle. peanuts, corn. grain sorghums and vegetables
<br />also produced.

<br />1961 value added by manufacturing. $2.3 billion, 1st in the
<br />State. Area highly industrialized with over 2,500 manufac.
<br />turing plants; nation's largest concentration of petrochemical
<br />plants. Leads the nation in manufacture of petroleum

<br />metal and plastic containers and industrial machinery. 1913
<br />estimated county retail sales, $5.2 billion, 1st in the State.
<br />84,494 students enrolled in 16 county colleges and universities
<br />in Fall, 1914. The Texas Medical Center. one of the nationsls
<br />largest. located here provides extensive medical care and
<br />educational opportunities. The L .B.J. Manned Spacecraft
<br />Center and Ellington Air Force Base are also located here.
<br />88.5 million short tons of cargo handled in the Houston
<br />port in 1913, the largest Texas port and third largest in
<br />the Nation. A leading financial center; 130 banks held
<br />combined 12-31-13 deposits of $9,511,563,191.

<br />1913 value of all minerals produced, $211.8 million. 1913
<br />crude oil production, 30.3 million barrels; 1913 natural
<br />gas marketed, 19.1 billion cubic feet. Four gasoline plants,
<br />a cycling plant and 6 refineries 10ca ted in the county. The
<br />Astrodome Complex, the L.B.J. Manned Spacecraft Center.
