<br />Harris County Characteristics: Harris County is a Gulf Coast
<br />county and component of the Houston metropolitan area, traversed
<br />by Interstate Hi9hways 10 and 45. Econ~ based on industry,
<br />mineral production, agriculture shipping.
<br />
<br />Area is highly industrialized with over 2,Boo manufacturing
<br />plants, nation's largest concentration of petrochemical plants.
<br />Total value of manufactured goods produced in 1978, $23 billion,
<br />4th in the nation.* Leads the nation in manufacture of petroleum
<br />equipment, agricultural chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, oil
<br />and gas pipeline transmission. Other principal products include
<br />steel, electronic equipment, food, shipbuilding, hand tools,
<br />metal and plastic containers and industrial machinery. 1978
<br />retail sales S12.5 billion, 1st in the state.* 95,293 students
<br />enrolled in 17 colleges and universities in the fall of 1978.
<br />The Texas Medical Center, one of the nation's largest, provides
<br />extensive medical care and educational opportunities. The
<br />L.B.J. Manned Spacecraft Center is located here. 104.3 million
<br />short tons of cargo handl'ed in the Houston Port in 1977, the
<br />largest Texas port and third largest in the nation. A leading
<br />financial center, 159 banks held combined 12-31-78 deposits of
<br />S18,169,268,460.

<br />1977 value of all minerals produced $438.6 million. 24 million
<br />barrels of crude oil and 88 billion cubic feet natural gas pro-
<br />duced in 1978. Four gasoline plants have a combined maximum
<br />daily capacity of 383 million cubic feet and six refineries have
<br />a combined daily capaity of 1.5 million barrels.

<br />The county ranks 1st in the state in population with 1976 esti-
<br />mate 2,066,169, increasing 18.6S from 1970. 1978 total effec-
<br />tive buying income $18.4 bil1ion.* Median effective buying in-
<br />come per household $20,228, compared to the state median of
<br />$15,914.* 35.8~ of the households above $25,000 effective buying
<br />income, with 16.3~ below $8,000.*

<br />CITY OF LOMAX
<br />
<br />The City of Lomax is located 20 miles east of the City of Houston
<br />and adjacent to the eastern boundary of Deer Park. Estimated
<br />1976 population 1,096, increasing 22.6~ from 1970. 1975 per
<br />capita income $5,982, compared to the state average of $4,641.
<br />Many residents of the city are employed at the nearby ship
<br />channel and other surrounding industrial complexes.
