<br />REGIONAL-CITY DATA <br /> <br />LaPorte is located on Galveston Bay, approximately 25 miles east of <br />Houston. The Houston Ship Channel runs along the northern boundary of <br />the city. Shipping and port activities, as well as industrial chemical <br />manufacturing plants, provide the basis for economic stability. <br />Galveston Bay is also a center for boating, fishing, and other water <br />recreation activities. Schools are modem and well staffed. The City <br />of LaPorte boasts many municipal recreation facilities, including a golf <br />course, recreation and fitness center, waterfront convention center, bay <br />front ,picnic area, nature trailS, and wave pooi, in addition to its <br />sixteen neighborhood parks. A plan for further waterfront development <br />is currently being studied. <br /> <br />The current population of the city, according to the 1990 census, is <br />27,900. A new suspension bridge on State Highway 146, completed last <br />year, has replaced a narrow two-lane tunnel crossing the Houston Ship <br />Channel. Since the opening of this bridge, traffic, has increased <br />greatly in the area, bringing new business to the community_ State <br />Highway. 146 is the major north/south traffic artery through the city, <br />While State Highway 225, Spencer Highway, and Fairmont Parkway provide <br />access to the west. <br /> <br />San Jacinto Junior College, Lee College, and University of Houston at <br />Clear Lake all lie within ten miles of LaPorte. <br /> <br />Two extremely popular tourist attractions are found within the area. The <br />'famous San Jacinto Battleground and Monumez:l,t, the site of Texas' <br />overwhelming victory to ensure independence from Mexico, is situated on <br />the banks of the Houston Ship Channel in LaPorte I s extraterri torial <br />jurisdiction. Johnson Spacecraft Center, the home of NASA, is located <br />within ten miles of the. city. <br /> <br />NEIGHBORHOOD DATA <br /> <br />The subject neighborhood extends from - Highway 225 on the north to <br />Spencer Highway on the south, and from Highway 146 on the east to <br />Underwood Road on the west. This area encompasses the semi-agricultural <br />region known as Lomax. This community, now part of LaPorte, was once a <br />ci ty in its own right. ,It is composed of large tracts of land, some of <br />which have been subdivided into small subdivisions. It is common to see <br />horses, barns, and corrals in the neighborhood. The area contains a <br />wide variety of housing, ranging from small wood frame farm houses to <br />very large and expensive homes. 'Battlegrounds Vista is largely <br />undeveloped and contains few homes. The street pattern within the <br />subdivision consists of three dead-end streets extending from one street <br />Which serves as an entrance. Only one of the dead-end streets is <br />surfaced, and there is no residential development on the others. LaPorte <br />Municipal Airport is situated just west of the subject property.
