In 2008, the Texas Gulf Coast <br /> <br />Need for Resiliency <br />was struck by Hurricanes Gustav, Dolly, and Ike, as well as Tropical <br />Planning <br />Storm Eduardo, all of which occurred in a span of less than 60 days. <br /> <br />Just three years prior, the Texas Gulf Coast was also struck by <br /> <br />On September 13, 2008, <br />Hurricane Rita. Each of those hurricanes caused damage to homes, <br />Hurricane Ike devastated the <br />personal property, businesses, and the environment. Out of those <br />Texas Gulf Coast. <br />hurricanes, Ike caused the greatest impacts to La Porte (see inset <br />4 <br /> <br />next page), and in many ways the City has yet to fully recover.. <br />Estimated losses in La Porte: <br />While history shows that the upper Texas Gulf Coast will always live <br />with a constant threat of these natural disasters, research shows <br />3,861 residential units <br /> <br />that there are ways for cities to reduce or even avoid many of the <br />substantially damaged or <br />impacts of these storms. First by examining the effects and greatest <br />destroyed <br /> <br />areas of vulnerability; followed by the incorporation of long-term <br />$11 million in commercial <br /> <br />mitigation strategies and implementation tools into the <br />damage <br /> <br />comprehensive plan (and other master plans, e.g., master drainage <br />$2.9 million in damage to <br /> <br />plan) policies and its implementing regulations. While the City has already been <br />proactive in many areas, a comprehensive and coordinated approach to <br />resiliency planning is addressed by this plan to ensure that such items as <br />land use (e.g., protection of natural resource areas for surface water <br />retention or transfer) and the built environment (e.g., requiring <br />own capital <br />projects. <br />Landlocked; Focus on Infill and Quality.
