Mr. Herman Promise, Chairman of the Human Herman Promise <br />Development Committee, addressed the Commission addressed the <br />to ask if the members of the Commission had Commission in <br />received an invitation to attend a meeting with Regards to fire <br />the Human Development Committee on November 3 0, of Nov. 23,1972 <br />1972. Mr. Promise stated he had not received <br />a reply from the Commission, except for Mr. Boyle, <br />who had replied that he had a previous commitment. <br />Mayor Thomas informed Mr. Promise that the <br />invitation had been received and on that date <br />the Commission was having a duly called work <br />shop meeting, and that if the Human Development <br />• Committee had any problems they needed to discuss <br />with the Commission they were welcome to come <br />to City Hall and discuss any problems or complaints, <br />but since the citizens of La Porte had elected <br />this Commission to transact city business, it <br />would be done at the City Hall. <br />Mr. Promise stated the Committee had called the <br />meeting to discuss the fire on November 23,1972 <br />in which two small children had died. He stated <br />he felt there was a problem with fire protection <br />for the northside residents because firemen were <br />not familiar with the northside and do not know <br />where the fire plugs are located and pointed <br />out that there were no black men in the fire <br />department and he felt there should be, as they <br />would be more familiar with addresses in that <br />part of town. Mr. Promise stated he had taken <br />fire training in order to join the department, <br />but that he had never been notified by the Board <br />if he qualified. He asked Mayor Thomas if the <br />Mayor could promise him there would be black men <br />in the fire department. <br />Comm. Boyle stated Mr. Promise knew why he did <br />not qualify as a fireman and that any man that <br />• qualified, regardless of color, would be accepted <br />in the department. <br />
