CONSIDER A VARIANCE REQUEST FOR LOTS 14, 15, AND 16, BLOCK 155, <br />TOWN OF LA PORTE, HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS, TO ALLOW A DUPLEX TO <br />BE BUILT, AND IF SO, GRANT A VARIANCE REGARDING THE REQUIRED <br />1050 SQUARE FEET IN THE SECOND LIVING UNIT - Pat Muston, <br />chairman of t e Planning and Zoning Commission was recognized <br />and stated they had received a request to allow a duplex to <br />be built on Lots 14, 15, and 16, Block 155, and if the Commission <br />allowed this, then asked to give a variance to the 1050 square <br />feet in the second unit; also, asked for clarification of the <br />term "duplex". Mrs. Muston further stated that the Planning and <br />Zoning Commission members were in favor of granting the request. <br />A copy of the recommendation is attached and made a part of these <br />minutes. <br />Ms. Rachel Hampton presented a sketch and set of plans for the <br />proposed duplex. <br />Mayor Meza asked if there was anyone present wishing to speak <br />in opposition to the rezoning request? <br />The following citizens spoke in opposition to the request: <br />• Steve Remick - 808 S. 2nd - was recognized and spoke in opposition <br />to t e request. <br />Dennis Dunham - 816 S. 1st - stated he was opposed to any high <br />density unit and stated he opposed the request. <br />Charles Sanders - 805 S. 2nd - stated he was opposed to any <br />change in zoning; if it was allowed, then what would happen <br />to the next three vacant lots? <br />Douglas Newton - 811 S. 2nd - opposed to the request. <br />Leroy Cope-land- - 810 S. 2nd - opposed. <br />A. L. McFayle - 902 S. 2nd - opposed. <br />Wm. Carpenter - 814 S. 2nd - opposed. <br />Ms. Rachel Hampton spoke for the request. She stated that <br />the estimated cost of the unit would be $57,000. She planned <br />to live in one unit and rent to an elderly friend. She further <br />stated that she was a school teacher in La Porte and planned <br />to remain here until retirement. <br />After a brief discussion, motion by Commissioner Cline, seconded <br />by Commissioner Tomerlin that the public hearing be recessed for <br />the Planning and Zoning Commission to leave the chambers and bring <br />back their recommendation. <br />
