CONSIDER APPROVING PROPOSED ORDINANCE N0. 1166- ORDINANCE APPROVING THE REVISIONS TO THE HOME RULE CHARTER OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE AND AUTHORIZING THE CITY ATTORNEY TO SUBMIT THE PORTIONS OF SUCH WHICH AFFECT VOTING, ALONG WITH SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION, TO THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE FOR APPROVAL; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE CONTINUED The Attorney continued by saying that every voter must be notified of the proposed change and a copy sent to each. We also are checking with the Justice Department to see whether or not we have to translate the Charter into Spanish; it will be published in the paper. Commissioner Cline stated she still had problem with the language. The City Attorney stated that we have a tight time schedule for a January election; the district lines will be submitted to the Justice Department at a later date. .'7 After-the proposed ordinance was read in full, motion by Commis- sioner Cline, seconded by Commissioner Kibodeaux to approve Ordinance No. 1166 as read with the notation that the language can be discussed at future dates with the Charter Revision Committee. Motion carried by the following vote: AYES: Commissioners Tomerlin, Kibodeaux, and Cline. NAYS: None. ABSENT: Commissioner Simons. CAPTION: AN ORDINANCE APPROVING THE REVISIONS TO THE HOME RULE CHARTER OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE AND AUTHORIZING THE CITY ATTORNEY TO SUBMIT THE PORTIONS OF SUCH WHICH AFFECT VOTING, ALONG WITH SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION, TO THE UNTTED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE FOR APPROVAL; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. Mr. Pfeiffer stated that the Charter Revision Committee would be more than. happy to meet and discuss any problems or questions regarding the proposed Charter. + + + • .7
