December 19, 1984, Page 15
Pfeiffer: Agrees with Ed about emergency preparedness. It is
very critical that we do something. The citizens in La Porte
put up with a lot living with the types of industry in the
area, and we need to prepare as well as we can.to protect
those people. Just having PPG in our city limits is a
detriment to a lot of people moving into La Porte. We need to
budget a large sum each year to equip and educate our fire and
police departments on how to handle these emergencies.
'Skelton: He had brought up the subject of pipelines several
months ago. He would like to look into what they are
carrYing; they could change products and we would never know.
He would like to see this looked into as part of the emergency
plan.
Asked for a report on the sidewalks we've been working on for
about the last three years. . Director of Community Development
John Joerns reported that it should all be underway shortly
after the Christmas holidays.
Mr. Skelton stated he would make a list of all the street
. lights over on the east side of La Porte that are not working
and give them to staff.
He wished Council a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, as
he probably would not see them until January 7.
Malone: Friday the 17th, the Union Carbide plant in West
Virginia was fined $55,000 for something similar to what Ed
and Lin are mentioning. This is the second fine they have
had, and in one month they had 9 violations. So what you're
saying is correct.; we need some way to protect ourselves and
the citizens if something should happen.
Wished everyone a Merry Christmas.
.
~ ~
