<br />e <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />ANIMAL CONTROL REPORT <br /> <br />Introduction <br /> <br />As requested by the City Council during a November 2, 1987 Animal <br />Ord inance \'iorkshop, thi s report presents its find ings regard ing <br />the following areas of concern: <br /> <br />o cu rrent ex pend i tu res and revenues of the City's Humane <br />Division; <br /> <br />o the animal registration process; <br /> <br />o "microchip" animal identification tags; <br /> <br />o a "one-time" registration fee incentive; and <br /> <br />o an "amnesty period" of 30 or 60 days for compliance <br />under the newly amended animal ordinance. <br /> <br />Summary - "Animal and Fowl" Ordinance <br /> <br />Since February 14, 1927, the City of La Porte has had an "Animal <br />and Fowl" Ordinance. Currently, this ordinance listed under <br />Chapter 5 of the City's Code Book (See Attachment I), was repealed <br />and enacted on March 3, 1977. This ordinance was des igned to <br />protect the citizens of La Porte by establishing various <br />regulations and fines concerning the care and maintenance of all <br />animals and fowl residing within the City's corporate boundaries. <br /> <br />Amendments to this ordinance had not been made until August 12, <br />1987 , in which City Counc i 1 approved Ord inance No. 1559 (See <br />Attachment II). Generally, Ordinance No. 1559 amends the current <br />"Animal and Fowl" Ordinance as it relates to dogs and cats by <br />updating animal fees for dogs (cats are also included), limiting <br />the number of animals (both dogs and cats) to three (3) per <br />household, and adding new regulations and fees for kennels and <br />animal abandonment. <br />
