• <br />Galveston Bay Plan Presentation to Local Governments <br />KEY POINTS <br />1. Why a Galveston Bay Plan? <br />a. Galveston Bay has been declared an estuary of national significance, is part of a <br />five-year federal/state partnership for planning. <br />b. Studies have been conducted on the Bay: conditions are not as bad as some have <br />thought, but several significant problems remain. <br />a Management systems exist, but are fragmented. <br />2. Uses of the Plan <br />a. Blueprint for a new Galveston Bay Authority to coordinate management <br />programs for Galveston Bay. <br />b. Guide for federal, state and local regulations. <br />c. Strategy for increasing funding for projects to improve the bay. <br />3. Potential Major Local Government Responsibilities Under the Plan <br />a. Reduce wastewater bypasses and overflows. <br />b. Reduce nonpoint source pollution. <br />c. Improve shoreline planning and management <br />d. Preserve valuable habitat <br />e. Involve citizens in preserving and enhancing Galveston Bay. <br />
