MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF <br />LA PORTE CITY COUNCIL <br />FEBRUARY 26, 1996 <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />The meeting was called to order by Mayor Norman L. Malone at 6:00 P.M. <br />Members of City Council Present: Mayor Norman L. Malone, Councilperson Guy Sutherland, Mike <br />Cooper, Bob McLaughlin, Alton Porter, Deotis Gay, Jack Maxwell and Jerry Clarke <br />Members of Council Absent: Councilperson Bob Thrower <br />Members of City Staff Present: Assistant City Manager John Joerns, City Attorney Knox Askins, City <br />Secretary Sue Lenes, Director of Finance/ACM Jeff Litchfield, Director of Administrative Services Louis <br />Rigby, Director of Public Works Steve Gillett, Police Chief Bobby Powell, Assistant Finance Director <br />Cynthia Alexander, Purchasing Agent Susan Kelley, <br />Others Present: Dr. John Sawyer, Superintendent of LPISD Schools, Ken Schlather, President of LPISD <br />Board of Trustees, and a number of other persons, to be named later, representing LPISD; and several La <br />Porte citizens <br />2. INVOCATION BY REV. MARLIN FINN, FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH <br />The invocation was delivered by Rev. Marlin Finn pastor of the First United Methodist Church in La <br />Porte, Texas. <br />3. CONSIDER APPROVING MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING FEBRUARY 12, 1996 <br />Motion was made by Councilperson Cooper to approve the minutes of February 12 as presented. Second <br />by Councilperson Maxwell. The motion carved, 8 ayes, 0 nays. <br />Ayes: Councilpersons Sutherland, Cooper, McLaughlin, Porter, Gay, Maxwell, Clarke and Mayor <br />Malone <br />Nays: None <br />4. PROCLAMATIONS: <br />A. RELAY FOR LIFE DAY - AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY <br />B. TEXAS PUBLIC SCHOOLS WEEK <br />Mayor Malone asked the City Council to join him in proclaiming March 29 and 30, 1996, as Relay for <br />Life Day. Receiving the proclamation was Rosalie Kuntz, President Southeast Harris County Unit of the <br />American Cancer Society. <br />Mayor Malone proclaimed the week of March 10 through 16, 1996, as Texas Public Schools Week. <br />Accepting the proclamation were Dr. John Sawyer, Superintendent of LPISD Schools, Ken Schlather, <br />President of LPISD Board of Trustees, Nina Zoch, LPISD Board of Trustees, Mary McDermott -Jackson, <br />Principal of Lomax Jr. High, Mary Cantwell, Assistant Principal at Bayshore, Gayla Garnett, Assistant <br />Principal of Baker Jr. High, Charles Wilder, Assistant Principal of College Park Elementary, Karen <br />Patrick, Assistant Principal of Rizzuto Elementary, and spokesperson for the group, Beth Rickert, Director <br />of Communications and Public Information Officer of LPISD. <br />
