City Council Minutes — January 10, 2000 — Page 2 <br />5. Presentations: <br />A. Ed Butchee, Special Operations Sergeant for the Police Department was <br />recognized as retiring from the City of La Porte. Mr. Herrera and Chief Reff <br />presented Sergeant Butchee with a gift from the City. <br />B. Bill White with the American Legion presented the Officer of the Year Award to <br />Jerome McKown. The Honorable Senator Mike Jackson and numerous <br />personnel from the Police Department were in attendance for the presentation. <br />6. Open Public Hearing — Mayor Malone opened the Public Hearing at 6:18 PM. <br />Review by Staff — Director of Planning Doug Kneupper presented summary and <br />recommendation outlining rezoning approximately 9.71 acres from Planned Unit <br />Development (P.U.D.) to Medium Density Residential (R-2) zone. Mr. Kneupper noted <br />that the Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved the request. <br />Public Input — Spero Pomonis voiced his opinion against the change. <br />Danny Manor, 3718 Sunrise, voiced his opinion against the change. <br />J.L. Thompson, Tarpan Lane, voiced his opinion to stay with R-1 rating. <br />Recommendation of Staff— Mr. Kneupper advised council they may want to table this <br />item to a future meeting date due to the comments from citizens and council, otherwise, <br />the recommendation of staff is to proceed forward with this change as approved by the <br />Planning and Zoning Commission. <br />Close Public Hearing — Mayor Malone closed the Public Hearing at 7:06 PM. <br />7. Council considered approving an ordinance amending ordinance number 1501, more <br />commonly referred to as the Zoning Ordinance, by changing classification of that certain <br />parcel of land herein described - approximately 9.71 acres from Planned Unit <br />Development (P.U.D.) to Medium Density Residential (R-2) zone. <br />City Attorney read: ORDINANCE 1051-HH — AN ORDINANCE AMENDING <br />ORDINANCE NO. 1501, MORE COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS THE ZONING <br />ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE, BY CHANGING CLASSIFICATION <br />OF THAT CERTAIN PARCEL OF LAND HEREIN DESCRIBED; MAKING <br />CERTAIN FINDINGS OF FACT RELATED TO THE SUBJECT; FINDING <br />COMPLIANCE WITH THE OPEN MEETINGS LAW; AND PROVIDING AN <br />EFFECTIVE DATE HEREOF. <br />Motion was made by Councilperson Porter to approve the ordinance as presented by Mr. <br />Kneupper. Second by Councilperson Gay. The motion carried. <br />Ayes: Sutherland, Engelken, Ebow, Porter, Gay, and Mayor Malone. <br />Nays: Griffiths, Young, and Clarke <br />Abstain: None <br />
