<br /> <br />RESOLUTION <br />/L()(f(.. 09 <br /> <br />**** <br /> <br />WHEREAS, injuries and deaths from traffic crashes bring loss and suffering to the <br />citizens of this community; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the cost of such injuries brings economic hardship to families; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the community's health care system and emergency response resources are <br />significantly impacted by injuries from traffic crashes; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, research shows that using safety belts and child safety seats is still the <br />single most effective way to reduce injuries and save lives in traffic crashes; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, research shows that when a driver is unbuckled, 70 percent of the time <br />children in that vehicle are also unbuckled; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in 2007 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that <br />when safety belt use in Texas reaches 85 percent, each year 241 lives will be saved, 5,275 <br />nonfatal injuries will be prevented and $392 million in economic savings to society will <br />result; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the "Click It or Ticket Texas" campaign includes intensified law <br />enforcement and public education designed to encourage and enhance the habitual use of <br />safety belts within the community. <br /> <br />ATTEST: " .11# <br />ufflJP~~ <br /> <br />City Secretary <br /> <br />
