<br />Economic Base & Job Creation
<br />La Porte's employment base expanded between 2005 and 2006 (the last year data is
<br />available at the sub-county level), adding 3,200 new jobs or a 10.8 percent increase in total
<br />employment. In 2006, there were approximately 29,300 La Porte-based business employees.
<br />The Manufacturing, Construction, and Transportation & Warehousing sectors playa large
<br />role in the La Porte economy. These three sectors account for more than 60.0 percent of La
<br />Porte's current total employment, compared to 21.6 percent for the Houston MSA and 51.5
<br />percent Deer Park. Over the past two years, La Porte's employment base has likely
<br />contracted because of declining natural resource prices, fallin~,mternational trade, and the
<br />national recession. Continued growth at the Port CrossingG>mmerce Center and
<br />redevelopment activity associated with Sylvan Beach,P"!rt,te~sent the most likely
<br />,. J"
<br />opportunities for growth over the next few years, Q,verthe long-t~m, filling retail trade gaps
<br />and expanding tourism-related activity (ex. Mat!l"$treet redevelopment and Bayport Cruise
<br />Terminal) should help diversify the local econOmy.
