activities <br /> B_ If a site is determined to. be located in a <br /> wooded area, any necessary vegetation <br /> clearing shall. be done in such a manner <br /> that the root zone is not disturbed until <br /> an arcliaeoiogist has completed and <br /> investigation of the site, including <br /> removal of all artifacts. This may be <br /> accomplished by using manually operated <br /> chain saws or mechanical cutters to cut <br /> down ttees at ground level and lifting <br /> then onto trucks for transport out of the <br /> right of way rather than dragging them <br /> When archaeological work is completed, <br /> stump grinders may be used to remove the <br /> remaining portions of large trees below <br /> grotiind level, after which the surrounding <br /> surface can be prepared for construction. <br /> More specific procedures for avoidance or <br /> lessening of damage to sites will be <br /> decided on a site -by -site basis, or as <br /> directed by the State Historic <br /> 1 Preservation Office. <br /> C. In certain circumstances, it may be <br /> necessary for vehicles to cross the <br /> identified archaeological /historical <br /> • <br /> areas. In such cases, loose earth fill; <br /> or other temporary ground cover, in a <br /> thickness necessary to prevent damage by <br /> the passage of vehicles over the site <br /> surface will be placed on such sites. The <br /> fill shall be a contrasting color or <br /> texture so as to allow re-- establishment of <br /> the original site surface at a later date. <br /> The Grantee /Contractor shall document the <br /> placement and removal of such temporary <br /> fill. <br /> 11.1.2 Unknown archaeological or historical site (s)) <br /> A.
