<br />roleintheLaPorteeconomy.Thesethreesectorsaccountformorethan60.0percentofLa
<br />tƚƩƷĻƭcurrenttotalemployment,comparedto21.6percentfortheHoustonMSAand51.5
<br />percentDeerPark.Overthepasttwoyears,LatƚƩƷĻƭemploymentbasehaslikely
<br />contractedbecauseofdecliningnaturalresourceprices,fallinginternationaltrade,andthe
<br />nationalrecession.ContinuedgrowthatthePortCrossingCommerceCenterand
<br />redevelopmentactivityassociatedwithSylvanBeachParkrepresentthemostlikely
<br />opportunitiesforgrowthoverthenextfewyears.Overthelongterm,fillingretailtradegaps
<br />andexpandingtourismrelatedactivity(ex.MainStreetredevelopmentandBayportCruise
<br />Terminal)shouldhelpdiversifythelocaleconomy.
