<br />The fact that workers will commute to La Porte for work is a good indicator that future tourism and quality <br />of place projects (i.e. Sylvan Beach and downtown) will attract visitors from neighboring communities. <br />(I,11) <br /> <br />-70%) peer communities. (I,21) <br />(Note: This means that the city is experience retail leakage, and our existing retailers are neither meeting the <br />retail demand within our city, nor attracting customers from other communities.) <br /> Strengths <br />: Bay front location, Sylvan Beach, and historic Main Street top the list. Others included a strong <br />industry base, low cost of living, current and planned parks, and close proximity to all the educational, <br />cultural, and business assets of the Greater Houston Area (II,1,3) <br /> Weaknesses <br />Downtown and the Bay Front, intra-city communication, limited undeveloped land, and the lack of <br />economic diversification. (II,1,3) <br /> Threats <br />: Truck traffic, oil and gas industry downturn, external perception of La Porte, flooding, and growth <br />management. O <br /> <br /> Opportunities <br />: Quality of Life factors including downtown revitalization, and Sylvan Beach improvement, <br />connecting Main <br />readiness, and continued investment in parks and trails. Capitalizing on these opportunities will please the <br />residents and encourage the growth of a more diverse mix of businesses. (I,1,3) <br /> <br />Downtown: The City of La Porte has a tremendous opportunity to further ramp up the <br />o <br />ability to attract tourists and retailers. (II,10) <br /> <br />Sylvan Beach: Significant improvements have been made to Sylvan Beach. <br />o <br />(II,10-11) <br /> <br />Beautification <br />o <br />represents an opportunity for the City. Beautification initiatives are a visible representation of the <br /> <br /> <br />Tourism: Tourism represents an opportunity for La Porte to diversify its economy, but it will not <br />o <br />reach its full potential unless the City invests in beautification, downtown revitalization, and Sylvan <br />Beach improvements. (II,12) <br /> <br />Retail Readiness: Another opportunity is to offer local residents a good level of support for starting <br />o <br />their own businesses.
