As a first step in improving the property's appearance, the <br />City recently relocated the fence along Spencer Highway with the intent to <br />eventually construct a portion of the City -wide trail system along the <br />frontage. <br />Railroads <br />Rail transportation in the La Porte area is provided by the Union Pacific <br />Railroad which operates in 23 states across the western two - thirds of the <br />United States. A Union Pacific Railroad line runs alongthe north City limits of <br />La Porte, along the southern right -of -way of S.H. 225. The line provides port <br />terminal service to the Battleground Industrial District north of S.H. 225 as <br />well as the Barbours Cut Terminal in Morgan's Point. The main line branches <br />south on a north /south alignment parallel to S.H. 146, extending south along <br />S.H. 146 to the Port of Galveston. This line branches off to provide service to <br />the Bayport Industrial District south of Fairmont Parkway and the Bayport <br />Terminal. In the Houston - Galveston Region, the Union Pacific Railroad <br />operates 1,248 freight trains weekly, which accounts for over 57 percent of <br />the regions freight movement. <br />improvements at existing crossings <br />are potential solutions. In fact, the <br />recent completion of the grade <br />separated crossing over Fairmont <br />Parkway was well received and <br />considered a success.
