more shade and more opportunities for socialization, among other <br />things). <br />6) Improve on -site and off -site accessibility to each park by developing a <br />sidewalk improvement program to repair, replace, or install new <br />sidewalks, crosswalks, and curb outs, in high pedestrian use <br />neighborhoods immediately surrounding the parks, schools, and other <br />community facilities. <br />a) Incorporate on -site handicap accessible walking trails that create <br />loop around the edge of each park and connect the important <br />amenities within the park, sothat users can utilize these trails for <br />walking, running, biking, roller b|odhng, pushing strollers, among <br />other things. <br />7) Continue to provide adequate funding in the annual capital and <br />operating budgets toenhance, improve, and maintain the existing public <br />parks, recreation, trails, and open space. <br />GOAL 10: Continue to add new park, recreation, and open space <br />areas to adequately accommodate the future needs of La Porte's <br />residents and visitors. <br />Action and Initiatives <br />1) Consider establishing an excise tax applied to nonresidential uses on e <br />square foot basis, which will serve tngenerate additional revenue for the <br />purpose mfexpanding and improving the Cit\/sparks and trails systems. <br />2) Concurrent with population growth, acquire an additional 12.16 acres of <br />neighborhood perNamd and an additional 26.68 acres of community <br />parkland in the areas of deficiency by the year 2030. Additional acreage <br />could beused to: <br />a)Establishing arecreation fitness center on the west side of the City. <br />b) Constructing anatatorium built and financed through ajoint City ba <br />Porte and/or Clear [reek |3D partnership (or other interested <br />stakeholders). <br />c) Facilitating greater linear linkages between the existing trail system <br />and all parks, schools, neighborhoods, open spaces, and other <br />important community amenities, <br />3} Continue to provide adequate funding imthe annual capital budget to <br />acquire and develop new park, recreation, trail, and open space areas <br />and improvements. <br />GOAL 11: Continue to offer and expand recreational and or cultural <br />programs that meet the interests and needs of persons of all ages <br />and abilities by providing programs independently and in <br />cooperation with partners. <br />
