• The will be a storage area in the building that will be big enough to hold the animal cages
and other equipment needed. The animal cages are currently being kept in the kennel
area. There will be an area to bath and dip animals to help with flea and tick control in
the shelter. It will have a drive thru Sallyport so that the animals can be unloaded from
the units in an area where they cannot escape. It is proposed to have exercise runs
outside so that the long-term animals can be placed in for exercise or can be used as extra
kennel space during disasters.
The proposed shelter will also have a separate euthanasia room, the current shelter
animals are euthanized in the same room that animals are being held. It would have a
separate building to house the freezers away from the main building due to smell. It is
also proposed to have an incinerator to dispose of animal carcasses. The city could also
contract out to other cities to dispose of there animals to help generate revenue.
We were able to get cost on two shelter projects, one from League City that is a kennel
area only with no parking lot or land and limited upgrades to the current building that
came out $153.00 per square foot. The second project is City of Brownsville, which
included land that was purchased five years ago came out to $193.00 per square foot.
Neither Project included an incinerator, which is approximately $60,000.00. The
proposed shelter is approximately 7500 square feet and estimated to cost with inflation
$2,250,000.00
• Proposed Rooms:
General Kennel Area for does:
(36) Kennels indoor/outdoor with sliding doors, glazed brick wall between every kennel
size inside 5 x 8, outside 5x 6, a 6 ft walkway between kennels 8 ft tall top on outside.
(2) Larger kennels, glazed brick wall between every kennel 10 x 8 inside, 10 x 6 outside
8 ft tall top on outside, will need hot and cold water in room for cleaning
(Inside area 2450 square feet and 1350 square feet outside area)
Ouarantine Kennel for does:
(4) Kennels glazed brick walls 5ft wide, 8ft deep 8ft tall with top and drain system kennel
5 ft wide by 8 ft deep with a 5 ft walkway (300 Square feet) will need hot and cold water
in room for cleaning
Isolation Kennel for does:
(4) Kennels glazed brick walls 5ft wide, 8ft deep 8ft tall with top and drain system kennel
5 ft wide by 8 ft deep with a 5 ft walkway (300 Square feet) will need hot and cold water
in room for cleaning
General Cattery area:
(24) Stainless Steel cat cages size with a 4 ft stainless work table room is 12 x 20 (240
• Square feet) will need hot water, cold water, and drain for cleaning
