Koonce Drive ~o i
Room 225
Houston, Texas 77061 '~,~ ~o?
'NISTa~'~
Mr. Cliff Hyde, Airport Manager
LaPorte Municipal Airport
11015 Spencer Highway
LaPorte, Texas 77571
Dear Mr. Hyde:
It has come to the attention of this office that plastic manufacturers
or jobbers are actively merchandising plastic replacement lenses for
L-802, L-822, and L-861 (FAA Specifications) edge light fixtures on
Airports. The runway and taxiway edge light is an optical system
designed to perform a specific function to aid the landing or taxiing
of aircraft. As such, the desired optical properties are derogated if
the lamp or lens used are not those specified by the manufacturer of
the fixture. To date, no plastic lenses for edge light fixtures have
been approved by the FAA.
The primary mission of the FAA is safety; therefore, we actively
solicit your support to insure all taxiway and runway edge light
components installed on your airport are of the type that have been
approved by the light fixture manufacturer. Your assistance in helping
us in our Aviation Safety Program is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
~_ o o
WILLIAM N.
