BOX 726 <br />- r <br />June 27, 1975 `"` ~"~ • ~~'0"~ ANGLETON, TEXAS 77515 <br />City of La Porte <br />P.0. 1115 <br />La Porte, Texas 77571 <br />Re: Ri s ~;g Uti 1 i ty Rates <br />The Cii~~ of Angleton would like to encourage all the cities in the area to <br />form a ce~ition and make a cooperative effort to insure that the citizens <br />of our cr~.:m~,nities get the fairest rate possible for the utilities they <br />purchase- <br />As you kr~o~.•; the cities of Texas City, LaP•1arque and Angleton were taken to <br />court by Co;;;munity Public Service because these cities opposed giving the <br />rate incr~~se requested. The judge ruled in favor of Community Public <br />Service allo~,ring them to put up bond and raise rates effective July 1, 1975. <br />It was aY~rent that the judge was of the opinion that the merits of the <br />case sf~o~ ~ d be tried before a jury. <br />Even thc~~.~; the three cities lost the first round, the City Council of the <br />City of .~~~~:~eton is convinced that a City Council is more responsive to the <br />needs of its citizens than a politically appointed commission, and would <br />rather +=~t the utility companies in a court of law than put their fate in <br />the hark:- of a utilities commission. <br />T !-:e Ci ~~;~ ~~ounci 1 of Angleton i s further convinced that, i f those cities who <br />Jct ra~•~ ~r:crease requests from a common utility provider would band <br />t.og~~!;~;~ a cooperative effort to cause the utility provider to provide <br />Good a;; gust cause for a rate increase, each Council could more effectively <br />ser•~re ~_`:_ community and it`s citizens. <br />The i~~a~,~o~ rind Council of the City of Angleton urge that you consider such <br />a coalition the next time you are pressed for a rate increase if you disagree <br />v~ith t;~e r°~,quest. <br />Si nce;~ <br />-~- ; <br />L_L, <br />City <br />`' n4 l - <br />-, <br />-i <br />":~ antham <br />i:~istrator . <br />
