• <br />ORDINANCE NO. <br />AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 23, "TAXATION," OF THE CODE OF <br />ORDINANCES OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE, BY EXEMPTING TWENTY THOUSAND <br />DOLLARS ($20,000.00) OF THE ASSESSED VALUE OF RESIDENCE HOME- <br />STEADS OF DISABLED ADULTS AND PERSONS SIXTY-FIVE (65) YEARS OF <br />AGE OR OLDER FROM ALL AD VALOREM TAXES LEVIED BY THE CITY OF <br />LA PORTE FROM AND AFTER JANUARY 1, 1981; FINDING COMPLIANCE WITH <br />THE OPEN MEETINGS LAW; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE HEREOF. <br />BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE: <br />Section 1. Section 23-3, Chapter 23, "Taxation," of the <br />Code of Ordinances of the City of .La Porte, Texas, is hereby <br />amended to read as follows, to -wit: <br />"TAXATION" <br />"Sec. 23-3. Exception to payment of Ad Valorem Taxes. <br />From and after January 1, 1981, Twenty Thousand Dol- <br />lars ($20,000.00) of the assessed value of residence home- <br />steads of an adult who is disabled for purposes of payment <br />of disability insurance benefits under Federal Old -Age, <br />Survivors and Disability Insurance, or is sixty-five (65) <br />years of age or older shall be exempted from ad valorem <br />taxes levied by the City of La Porte; provided, however, <br />that any person desiring the right of exemption shall first <br />complete and file with the Tax Assessor -Collector of the <br />City of La Porte a sworn statement stating his name, age, <br />and the legal description of said residence homestead; if <br />disabled, a copy of Social Security disability certifica- <br />tion; and, provided further, that no residence homestead <br />shall be entitled to more than one residence homestead <br />• tax exemption." <br />Section 2. This Ordinance shall take effect and be in <br />force from and after its passage and approval. <br />Section 3. The City Council officially finds, determines, <br />recites and declares that a sufficient written notice of the <br />date, hour, place and subject of this meeting of the City Council <br />was posted at a place convenient to the public at the City Hall <br />of the City for the time required by law preceding this meeting, <br />as required by the Open Meetings Law, Article 6252-17, Texas <br />Revised Civil Statutes Annotated; and that this meeting has been <br />open to the public as required by law at all times during which <br />this ordinance and the subject matter thereof has been discussed, <br />• considered and formally acted upon.
