RESOLUTION 83-_~ <br />A RESOLUTION NAM~G AND DESIGNATING THE NO~HSIDE CIVIC CENTER <br />AS THE "JENNIE RILEY CIVIC CENTER," IN APPRECIATION AND RECOG- <br />NITION OF JENNIE RILEY. <br />• <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE: <br />WHEREAS, Jennie Riley was instrumental in organizing a <br />recreation program and the Northside Civic Center in 1970; and <br />WHEREAS, for more than fifteen (15) years, Jennie Riley <br />has worked to provide the youth of La Porte with recreation and <br />educational programs; lectures; Black history classes; and has <br />assisted children with their school homework; and <br />WHEREAS, Jennie Riley helped organize a work-study program <br />with the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, for the young women of <br />the community; and <br />• WHEREAS, Jennie Riley has been active in government, civic, <br />cultural, and church activities in La Porte; and <br />WHEREAS, Jennie Riley has worked for the integration of <br />the public schools; establishment of satellite health clinics; <br />organization of a Black Youth Club and Black History Week; the <br />La Porte Sports Association; and the Black Youth Scholarship <br />Fund; and <br />WHEREAS, Jennie Riley has been active in voter registra- <br />tion drives; in establishing a senior citizen nutrition program; <br />and served as a member of the Home Rule Charter Commission; and <br />WHEREAS, Jennie Riley has received many civic honors, <br />including the prestigious Jefferson Award; and <br />WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of La Porte deems it <br />fitting and proper to recognize and honor Jennie Riley for her <br />many years of devoted and unselfish service to her community: <br />
