The effect of this amendment, opposed by committee leader- <br />ship, would have been to make the provision of two-way services <br />over cable systems very difficult, thereby ensuring that the pre- <br />sent revenue base of the telephone network would not be eroded as <br />a result of competition from cable companies. <br />The Subcommittee on Telecommunications, Consumer Protection, and <br />• Finance of the House Energy and Commerce Committee held hearings <br />on cable legislation on May 25 and a second hearing is scheduled <br />for June 22. Representative Timothy Wirth (D-Colo.), Chairman of <br />the Telecommunications Subcommittee, has indicated plans to move <br />cable legislation this year.
