• •- • <br />~'-- v r' <br /> <br />of the highest priorities of the citizens completing questionaires <br />at the outset of the Comprehensive Plan process was for additional <br />recreational facilities. Further, impressions from first-time <br />visitors and new residents alike have frequently been, "Where are <br />the parks?" La Porte has long been deficit in this area. This bond <br />issue would equip Little Cedar Bayou Park with several ammenities <br />to raise its status to that of a major attraction for the City, <br />including a pool, baseball, football/soccer, & tennis facilities, <br />picnic sites, and several other features. The second park would be <br />in the Lomax area, a 23 acre park including a pool and other <br />sports facilities. This park would be built 36 months following <br />passage of the bond issue. A separate issue is included to build <br />~an 8000 square foot gymnasium with support pavilions at the Lir_tle <br />Cedar Bayou location for approximately $1.5 million. <br />Another of the recommended general obligation bond issues is <br />$2.4 million for cor~ununity facilities. These include a civic <br />center and a Fire Department Training facility. A government <br />services center, as addressed in the Comprehensive Plan, was felt <br />to be too much, too soon, as compared with other needs of the <br />City. The concept of a Cultural Center (or Civic Center large <br />enough to serve 100,000 population), originally a $1.9 million <br />project, was trimmed to $216,000 by working with Harris County on <br />an arrangement to lease and refurbish Sylvan Beach Pavilion. Such <br />an economical and common-sense approach to community facilities is <br />to be highly commended. Another component of this bond issue is <br />relocation of Fire Star_ion II, in response to the rapid growth of <br />- 11 - <br />L ~/ <br />
