• <br />GENERAL INFORMATION <br />LOCATION <br />The City of La Porte covers an area of 17.48 square miles located in the southeast <br />quadrant of Harris County and is approximately twenty freeway minutes from Houston. <br />La Porte is bounded on the North by the Houston Ship Channel, and on the east by <br />Galveston Bay. The nation's largest concentration of petrochemical plants border the <br />City on pits north and south sides. <br />La Porte City Hall <br />La Porte Bayshore Area Profile <br />Located some 20 miles southeast of Houston on Galveston Bay in Harris County are the <br />three communities that make up the La Porte Bayshore Area: La Porte, Morgan's Point <br />and Shoreacres. The area has a combined population of approximately 35,000, of which <br />24,785 are located in the City of La Porte. <br />Though much of the image of this area is industrial, the La Porte-Bayshore area is <br />still characterized by an expanse of resort homes. Because of this, and the <br />metropolitan advantages of Houston 30 minutes away, La Porte is one of only a few <br />cities in the metropolitan Houston area that offers this favorable combination. The <br />City of La Porte operates its own municipal airport as well as a municipal swimming <br />pool, civic center and public works department. <br />Harris County <br />This 1,723 square mile county is a leading oil, gas and petrochemical area, having <br />over $439 million average annual production of petroleum, natural gas and natural gas <br />liquids. It has more than 2,800 manufacturing plants; the nation's largest <br />concentration of petrochemical plants, the third largest United States seaport; and is <br />a corporate management center. A significant part of the County's major employers, <br />manufacturers, education and financial institutions are located in Houston, the County <br />seat. <br />Residential construction completed for the twelve month period through December 31, <br />1984 exceeded $1.9 billion; non-residential construction awarded for the same period <br />was over $2.1 billion. As of June 30, 1985, 263 banks held combined deposits of $38.5 <br />billion. <br />The Texas Medical Center, located in Harris County, is one of the nation's largest, <br />providing medical care and education opportunities. Harris County's 64 hospitals have <br />16,922 beds, of which 4,589 are in the Texas Medical Center. <br />Harris County's General Obligation Bonds are rated "Asa" by Moody 's investors Service, <br />Inc. and "AAA" by Standard 6 Poor's Corporation. <br />a~ <br />
