Herrera, City Manager <br />~7C T ~wwv.a-~ <br />Sales Tax on Garbage Fees <br />October 7, 1987 <br />The state sales tax base has been broadened with the passage of <br />House Bill 61 to include many new services not previously taxed. <br />Among these included is garbage and other solid waste collection <br />or removal services. <br />4Jhen the October service is billed a seven percent sales will be <br />included in the charges for garbage service. However, the state <br />does exempt our schools and churches from collection of this <br />tax. <br />The new sales tax rate effective October 1, 1887 was brought to <br />six percent. The City of La Porte also invokes a one percent <br />sales tax on taxable goods and services within our city limits. <br />This gives a total sales tax of seven percent. <br />The Revenue Collection Division will begin billing the sales tax <br />on our utility bills in late October. This tax is mandated by <br />state legislation and is not invoked or changed at the local level <br />of government. <br />
