<br /> SUMMARY & RECOMMENDATION
<br /> Summarv
<br /> On September 12, 1994, City Council authorized a contract with Galveston Bay Land &
<br /> Marine, Inc. for the reconstruction of the Sylvan Beach Pier.
<br /> During the construction process, it was noted by staff that two sets of old pilings have
<br /> been creating marine hazards in the area as well as detracting from the beauty of
<br /> Galveston Bay. In addition, one set of pilings, which are below the water surface, will
<br /> create an obstruction to individuals fishing from the new pier.
<br /> As stated in the attached memo, the staff received a quote from the pier contractor for
<br /> removing the pilings. The cost, as shown on the attached bid quotes, are in the amount
<br /> of $10,000 for the pilings exposed to the north and $18,000 for the submerged pilings to
<br /> the south. Due to the expense involved, the staff worked with Harris County to share 50-
<br /> 50 in the cost of removing the pilings, reducing the cost to the City from $28,000 to
<br /> $14,000.

<br /> Recommendation
<br /> Staff recommends that the Council authorize the City Manager to Issue a change order
