• <br />APPENDIX <br />• <br />TRANSPORT OF CRITICAL PATIENTS POLICY <br />PREFACE: When critical conditions occur, a patient's chances <br />for survival depend upon the paramedic's quick <br />recognition of the severity of the patient's condition <br />and the judgement to implement a rapid transport to an <br />APPROPRIATE facility. <br />PURPOSE: To provide guidelines for the paramedic to utilize in <br />determining the appropriate destination and transport <br />means for the patient with critical injuries. <br />CRITICAL TRAUMA CONDITIONS <br />DEFINITIONS: Any patient presenting with any of the following: <br />1. Major head injuries. <br />2. Hypovolemic or neurogenic shock with appropriate <br />mechanism of injury, whether present of impending. <br />3. Indication of internal hemorrhage in the abdomen or <br />chest. <br />4. Gunshot wound to the head, chest or abdomen. <br />5. Penetrating injury to the head, chest or abdomen. <br />6. Critical burns. <br />7. Suspicion of aortic aneurism (abdominal). <br />8. Any combination of the above or any other traumatic injury <br />that would indicate a need for treatment at a trauma <br />center. <br />-11- <br />
