i • <br />RESOLUTION 96-OS <br />A RESOLUTION BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LA PORTS, TEAS, SUPPORTING THE <br />1972 SAN ON OCEAN DISPOSAL OF NUCLEAR WASTE. <br />WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of La Porte, Texas, has the moral <br />obligation to ensure an environment which will enhance the quality of life for <br />all children and adults alike; and <br />WHEREAS, the United States Navy has a proposal to dispose of up to 100 defueled <br />decommissioned nuclear submarines during the next three decades; and <br />WHEREAS, one of the options is for ocean disposal of these submarines; and <br />WHEREAS, the oceans are a food source for much of the world's population and <br />contamination of the food chain could have far reaching implications; <br />NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the City Council of the City of La Porte, Texas, <br />should support the 1972 ban on all ocean dumping of nuclear wastes until it can <br />be demonstrated that the safety and efficiency of ocean disposal offers less harm <br />to human health and the environment than other practical alternative methods of <br />disposal. <br />PASSED AND APPROVED, this 22nd day of Julv .1996. <br />CITY OF LA PORTS <br />o n L.
