LA PORTE LUMBER COMPANY WAS Of
THE EARLY BUSINESSES IN LA PORTE. IS
THE ONLY STORE BUILT IN LA PORTE's EARLY
TIMES THAT IS STILL OPERATING TODAY.

and was on the corner of Main and Third Streets. The
store occupied the lower floor, and the upper floor was
an apartment for the Seaureau family.
Two hotels--The Artesian so named because of the art-
esil!-n water that was prominent in the advertisements of
the New City. This justly famous water was piped, hot and
cold, to each of The Artesian's 50 rooms. At about the same
time Col. York built The Sylvan. It was out on the Bay...
where the trees and water meet...Jt soon became the Mecca
for vacationers from all over the United States. They dubbed
it The Sylvan Beach Hotel. This was in 1901.
This was later sold to the Catholic Diocese. It was first.
a school for boys and later a Seminary. Since the Sem-
inary has moved to Houston it is pOSSible to catch a glimpse
of the opulance of long ago when the women of St. Mary's
Guild offer their Monthly Luncheons.
Within a year Ed York built the Crescent Hotel at Crescent
Park on San Jacinto Bay, near the head of Barbour's cut.
This fine old hotel was sold to the Episcopal Diocese and
",as made into a boys' school in 1908. It was in operation
until it burned.
Many homes were being built at this time. J.H. York
built a beautiful home on the corner across from today's
Sylvan Shopping Center. It was a show place until it burned
in 1946. The old Isensee place was torn down to make room
for the filling station that now stands in the shopping center.
La Porte's first newspaper was the La Porte Chronicle.
It was established by Col. I.M. York and John Rice. Its
first edition was that of June 29, 1893. Among the twenty-six
advertisements on its pages were that of the La Porte
Lumber Company. It is the only one of the early businesses
La Porte suffered two disasterous fires. The first in 1893
destroyed most of the bright new town. The Artesian Hotel
was saved by a bucket brigade but the General Store, Busch
and Baker Meat Market, and Joe Kirkland's Store were
completely destroyed. Kirkland's Store was in the location
now occupied by Gafford's.
1915 was the date of the FIRE. The capitol letters are from
the memories of the people who saw their city burn. It
was in June and this small bayside town relaxed, rather
smugly, to read soaring temperatures in less fortunate
parts of the COlDltry. Then came the dread cry of fire!
Fire fighting equipment consisted of buckets and vollDl-
teers to relay them. They fought valiantly, but vainly as
most of the business houses burned.
The fire had started in a building on the corner of Second
Street and Main. A kerosene lamp seems to have been the
Culprit. Nearly the whole of the business section was des-
troyed. The Isensee and Olhoyworth Bakery, Chris Isen-
sees' Saloon, the Brisson Building (this was three stories
and built of brick), and the Sharp Building (now Toogood's)
were all ruined.
In flames on the other side .of the street was Sharp's
Ice Cream Parlor, The Busch-Baker Meat Market, the
post office and Lewis' Drug Store. All were completely
destroyed.
After two months spent in intensive re-building a tropical
hurricane roared in out of the Gulf and destroyed much
that was newly re-built. Once again these men who had
built La Porte cleared away the rubble and built their
town again. Their Faith and Strength is still apparent.

EDWARD SEAUREAU'S STORE WAS THE SECOND
BUSINESS PLACE BUilT IN LA PORTE. TWAS
BURNED IN THE FIRE OF 1915.
