"
AN ORDINANCE CREATING THE OFFICE OF CHIEF OF POLICE OF
THE CITY of LA PORTE, TEXAS; PROVIDING FOR APPOIlf'1l4ENT OF DE-
PUTIES; PR&SCRIBING THE DUTIES AND AUTHORITY OF SUCH OFFICER;
FIXING THE. CalPENSATION AND PROVIDING WHEN AND FROM WHAT FUNDS
IT SHALL BE PAID; REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES OR PARTS OF ORDINANCES
IN CONFLICT HEREWITH AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY CCKMISSION OF TIlE CITY OF LA
PORTE, TEXAS:
Section 1. That there is he~eby created the office or
Chief ot Police for the CIty of La Porte, Texas, Such Chief of
Police may '~ppolnt one or more Deputies, which appointment shall
only be valid upon the approval of the City Commission.
Section 2, The Chief of Police shall, in person or by
Deputy, attend upon the Corporation Court while in session, and
shall promptly and faithfully execute all writs and process is-
sued f1'Om said Court. He shall have like power, with the Sheriff
of the County, to execute warrants; he shall be active in quelling
riete, disorder and. disturbances of the p&ace within the city
limits and shall take into oustody all persons so offending a-
gainst the peace of the city and shall have authority to take
suitable aha suffioient bail for the appearanoe before the corpo-
ration 'court of any person charged with an offense against the
. ordinances or 1aW8 of the city. It shall be his duty to arrest,
without war~nt, all violators of the public peaoe, and all who

obstruct or interfere w1th h1m in the execution of the duties of
his office or who shall be gu11ty of any disorderly oondu9t or
disturbanoe ~hatever; to prevent a breach of the peace or preserve
quiet and gOOd order, he ~hal1 have authority to close any theatre,
ball room or other place or building of public resort. In the pre-
vention and 8uppress10n of crime and arrest of offenders, he shall

Sec.tion 3. That the Chief' ot Police shall l'ecelve, as
his compensation during the term of office, the sum of Two Hundred
Fifty Do1la~s ($250.00) per month, to be paid semi-monthly on or
alteI' thetirst and fifteenth days ot each calendar month, by
warrant drawn upon the Gene~al Funds of the City; proVided, how-
ever, that the City Commission may from time totime.a11ow such
ofticla1 compensation tor or reimbursement of necessary expenses.
Section 4. That all Ordina.nces and resolutions and parts
of Ordinances and/or resolutions heretofore passed, which are in
conflict herewith, are he~eby repealed by this Ordinance.
Section 5. That it any section or part of a section, or
one or more sections of this Ordinance be declared to be invalid,
such shall not affect the validity of the remaining parts hereof.
Section 6. That an emergency exists constituting an
imperative public necessity that the rule requiring Ordinances
to be read at three several meetings be suspended and this Or-
dinance t'ake 'effect and be in force from and after its passage
and approval, and it is so ordained.
