AN ORDINANCE REGULATING THE KEEPING OF DOGS IN THE CITY
OF LA PORTE; PROVIDING FOR A LICENSE AND TAX; PROVIDING FOR THE
VACCINATION OF DOGS; PROVIDING FOR A DOG POUND; PROVIDING FOR THE
RED~~PTION OF DOGS AND THE DISPOSAL THEREOF IF NOT REDEEMED; 4ID
PROVIDING THAT ANY PERSONS VIOLATING ANY PROVISION OF THIS ORDINANCE
SHALL BE DEmiED GUILTY OF A MISDEMEANOR AND UPON CONVICTION SHALL
BE FINED IN hNY SUM NOT EXCEEDING $100.00.

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LA
PORTE, TEXAS:

Section 1. That there is hereby levied and assessed up-
on each dog, male or female, kept or owned within the City of La
Porte, Texasg an annual tax of $1.00 each, which tax is to be due
and payable on the 1st day of May, of each year, and it is hereby
made the duty of the owner or keeper of any dog to pay .over to the
City Clerk, or his duly authorized agent, the said tax on or before
the 1st day of May of each year.
Section 2. That the City Clerk shall collect, or have
collected under supervision, all dog taxes and the City may employ
a special officer to be known as "Dog Catcher" whose duty shall be
to carry out the terms and provisions of this Ordinance, and the
City Clerk shall be authorized to pay to the Dog Catcher a com-
mission on all dogs impounded not to exceed the sum of $1.50 per

head.

Section 3. Upon the payment of said tax, the City
Clerk or his duly authorized agent, shall furnish the owner or
keeper of said dog or dogs with a tag on which is stamped the
number of registration and with the year for which tax is paid,
which tag. the owner or keeper shall attach to a, collar securely
fastened around the neck of such dog, and no dog shall be allowed

to run at large without the proper tag attached to the collar
around the neck of said dog. In no event shall the City Clerk
or his duly authorized agent issue a license tag to any owner

arian stating that such dog or dogs have been vaccinated against
rabies by him.
Section 4. All dogs within the City of La Porte, Texas,
are hereby required to be vaccinated against rabies by some li-

~ensed veterinarian on or before April 5 of each year and it is
further provided herein that every Veterinarian who vaccinates any
such dog, within the City of La Porte, Texas, shall collect his
fee for same from the owner of the dog and shall issue a cerf1ficate
of vaccination to such owner, stating the name of the owner, a
brief description of the dog, the date of vaccination and the fee
collected by him for same.
Whenever any person has complied with the provisions of
the preceding sections of the said dog tax is lost or otherwise

destroyed, it shall be the duty of said owner or keeper of said
dog to procure another tag from the City Clerk by paying the value

of said tag and all costs that may have accrued as hereinafter pro-
v id ed .
Section 5. It shall be. the duty of the Dog Catcher to
capture and impound in a pen to be provided by the City for that
purpose and called the "Dog Pound" and any dog found running a:b
large within the City of Ea Porte, Texas, without a tag as provided
for under the terms of this ordinance and if such dog.is not re-

deemed and reclaimed and taken from said pound within the time re-
quired under the p~ovisions of this Ordinance, then the Dog Catcher
shall advertise said dog for sale seventy-two hours by posting one
notice of said sale at the door of the city hall, which notice
shall give the time and place of sale and shall, if not redeemed,
sell ~aid dog at ~blic auction and if no one shall bid upon the
same, the amount of charges due on said dog, the said dog shall be
bought by the city at once and killed by the Dog Catcher .
Section 6. (a) The owner or keeper of any dog or dogs
captured or impounded under the provisions of this Ordinance shall
be permitted and allowed at any time within seventy-two hours af-

and again receive possession of said dog or dogs, upon payment to
the Dog Catcher of the sum "of firty cents (50~) per day or frac-
tional part thereof during which time said dog or dogs may have
been impounded for every such dog so impounded which sum so paid
to him shall by the Dog Catcher be paid over to the City Clerk

City as well as all other money received by him under the terms
of this Ordinance.
(b) Should the owner or keeper of said dog or dogs fail
to redeem the same as provided for in paragraph (a) of this section
within the seventy-two hours, then said dog or dogs shall be ad-
vertised and sold or killed in the manner provided for in this ordi-
nance. It. shall be the duty of the Dog Catcher to see that the
terms of this Ordinance are strictly enforced.
Section 7. The Dog Cabcher and any policeman of this
city shall have the right to shoot or kill any rabid dog.
Section 8. It shall be unlawful for any person to wil-
fully take, from any dog, a collar and tag.
Section 9. . Any person violating any provisions of this
Ordinance shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and upon convic-
tion shall be fined in any sum not
