HomeMy WebLinkAboutO-1961-626 . . ,.--=-.-:~""'_....--- . e - ORDINANCE NO. 626 AN ORDINANCE CALLING THE REGULAR ANNUAL ELECTION OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE, TEXAS; PROVIDING FOR A POLLING PLACE; APPOINTING ELECTION OFFICIALS; PROVIDING FOR RETURN AND CANVASS OF VOTES OF SAID ELECTION; PROVIDING FOR NOTICE; PROVIDING FOR FILING FEES FOR CANDIDATES; AND PROVIDING A SAVINGS CLAUSE. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE, TEXAS, THAT: Section 1. An election shall be held within the cor- porate limits of the City of La Porte, Texas, on the 25th day of April, 1961; such day being the fourth Tuesday in April, be- tween seven o'clock (7:00) A. M. and seven o'clock (7:00) P. M., for the purpose 01 electing a Commissioner of said City for Posi- tion Number 1 and a Commissioner of said City for Position Number 3. Section 2. There shall be but one (1) polling place, which shall be the City Hall, located within the corporate limits of the City of La Porte, Texas. Section 3. MRS. H. M. RALSTON is hereby appointed Judge of said election, MRS. OTIS HARRISON is hereby appointed Assistant Judge of said election and MRS. LOIS COMPTON, MRS. REX BAKER and MRS. HALLIE WRIGHT are hereby appointed Clerks of said election. Section 4. Immediately after the close of the polls on the 25th day of April, 1961, the election officials shall make due . return thereof to the City Commission and the City Commission shall canvass the returns on the Monday next following the 25th day of April, 1961, or sooner, provided that in the event of a failure, . from any cause, of the Commission to convene on the said Monday then the Commission shall be convened for that purpose upon the earliest day practicable thereafter, and shall immediately after canvassing the returns declare the results of the election and the Mayor shall immediately thereafter deliver to the candidate for whom the greatest number of votes have been polled for the office of Commissioner Position Number 1, a certificate of election and the Mayor shall immediately thereafter deliver to the candidate for whom the greatest number of votes have been polled for the office of Commissioner, Position Number 3, a certificate of e . . election, and such elected officials shall assume their duties within ten (10) days thereafter, Sundays excluded. Section 5. Notice of said election shall be given by publication in the La Porte Liberal, not less than thirty (30) days prior to the date of the said election, of the following notice: IlNOTICE OF ELECTION . I, H. P. Pfeiffer, Mayor of the City of La Porte, Texas, by virtue of the power vested in me by law, do hereby order that an election be held in the said City of La Porte, Texas, on the 25th day of April, 1961, for the purpose of electing two (2) Commissioners of said City, and that said election shall be held at the City Hall in said City between seven o'clock (7:00) A. M. and seven o'clock ~:OO) P. M. on said date, and the following named persons are the appointed officials of said election, to-wit: Judge - MRS. H. M. RALSTON Assitant Judge - MRS. OTIS HARRISON Clerk - MRS. LOIS COMPTON Clerk - MRS. REX BAKER Clerk - MRS. HALLIE WRIGHT sf H.P.Pfeiffer H. P. P~ffer, Mayor of the City of La Porte, Texas and further notice of said election shall be given by posting a . copy of this ordinance at the City Hall for thirty (30) days next preceding said election. Section 6. Upon a candidate tendering his application on the form prescribed, the ~ty Clerk shall furnish to such can- didate all information relative to the qualifications for the office being sought; the method of placing the candidate's name on the ballot; the amount of the required filing fee; and any other pertinent information concerning said election. Section 7. The City Clerk is hereby authorized and di- rected to give notice of said election in accordance with Section 5 hereof. . Section 8. The filing fee for each candidate shall be $50.00. . . . . ~ . e e Section 9. Each and every provision, paragraph, sen- tence and clause of this ordinance has been separately considered and passed by the City Commission of the City of La Porte, Texas, and each said provision would have been separately passed with- out any other provision, and if any provision hereof shall be ineffective, invalid or unconstitutional, for any cause, it shall not impair or affect the remaining portion, or any part thereof, but the valid portion shall be in force just as if it had been passed alone.
