AN ORDINANCE CALLING THE REGULAR ANNUAL ELECTION OF THE
CITY OF LA PORTE, TEXAS; PROVIDING FOR A POLLING PLACE;
APPOINTING ELECTION OFFICIALS; PROVIDING FOR REWRN AND
CANVASS OF VOTES OF SAID ELECTION; PROVIDING FOR NOTICE;
PROVIDING FOR FILING FEES FOR CANDIDATES; AND PROVIDING A
SA VINGS CLAUSE.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE,
TEXAS, THAT:
Section 1. An election shall be held within the corporate limits
of the City of La Porte, Texas, on the 28th day of April, 1964; such day
being the fourth Tuesday in April, between the hours of seven o'clock (7:00) A. M.
and seven o'clock (7:00) P. M., for the purpose of electing a Mayor and a
e. Commissioner of said City for Position Number 2 and a Commissioner of said
City for Position Number 4.
Section 2. There shall be but one (1) polling place, which shall
be the City Hall, located within the corporate limits of the City of La Porte,
Texas.
Section 3.
Mrs. H. M. Ralston
is hereby
appointed Judge of said election,
Mrs. Calvin Compton
and
Mrs. Otis Harrison
are hereby appointed Assistant
Judges of said election, and
Mrs. J. M. Higgins

and
are hereby appointed Clerks of said election.
Section 4. 'Immediately after the close of the polls on the 28th
day of April, 1964, the election officials shall make due return thereof to. the
City Commission and the City Commission shall canvass the returns on the
Monday next following the 28th day of April, 1964, or sooner, provided that in
the event of a failure, from arty cause, of the Commission to convene on the
said Monday then the Commission shall be convened for that purpose upon the
earliest day practicable thereafter, and 'shall immediately after canvassing the

returns declare the results of the election and the Mayor shall immediately

thereafter deliver to the candidate for whom the greatest number of votes
.e ha ve been polled for the office of Mayor, a certificate of election, and the
Mayor shall immediately thereafter deliver to the candidate for whom the
greatest number of votes have been polled for the office of Commission
Position Number 2, a certificate of election, and the Mayor shall immediately
thereafter deliver to the candidate for whom the greatest,number of votes
have been polled for the office of Commissioner, Position Number 4, a
certificate of election, and such elected officials shall assume their duties
within ten (10) days thereafter, Sundays excluded.
Section 5. Notice of said election shall be given by publication

in the official newspaper of the City of La Porte, not less than thirty (30)
days prior to the date of the said election, of the following notice:
"NOTICE OF ELECTION"
I, H. P. Pfeiffer, Mayor of the City of La Porte, Texas,
by virtueGf the power vested in me by law, do hereby
order that an election be held in the said City of La Porte,
Texas, on the 28th day of April, 1964, for the purpose of
electing a Mayor and two (2) Commissioners of said City,
and that said election shall be held at the City Hall in
said City between seven o'clock A. M. and seven o'clock
P. M. on said date, and the following named persons are

and further notice of said election shall be given by posting a copy of this
ordinance at the City Hall for thirty (30) days next preceding said election.
Section 6.- Upon a candidate tendering his application on the form
prescribed, the City Clerk shall furnish to such candidate all information

relative to the qualifications for the office being sought; the method of placing
the candidate's name on the ballot; the amount of the required filing fee; and
any other pertinent information concerning said election.
Section 7. The City Clerk is hereby authorized and directed to
give notice of said election in accordance with Section 5 hereof.
Section 8. The filing fee for each candidate for the office of
Mayor shall be $100. 00.
Section 9. The filing fee for each candidate for the office of
City Commissioner shall be $50.00.
Section 10. Each and every provision, paragraph, sentence, and
. clause of this ordinance has been separately considered and passed by the
City Commission of the City of La Porte, Texas, and each said provision
would have been separately passed without any other provision, and if any
provision hereof shall be ineffective, invalid or unconstitutional, for any
cause, it shall not impair or affect the remaining portion, or any part thereof,
but the valid portion shall be in force just as if it has been passed alone.
This ordinance shall have full force and effect upon passage and
approval.
