<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 86-24 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE, URGING <br />NASA TO KEEP THE SPACE STATION PROJECT AT THE JOHNSON SPACE CENTER. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the location of the Johnson Space Center near La Porte, <br /> <br />has contributed greatly to the economic well-being of the City of La <br /> <br />Porte, and the entire Houston area, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the projected space station project at the Johnson <br /> <br />Space Center would create as many as 1,900 to 3,000 additional jobs <br /> <br />in the La Porte area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Johnson Space Center faces the possible loss of up <br /> <br />to 1,900 potential jobs to the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, <br /> <br />if a proposed space station program reorganization goes through; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the proposed reorganization and loss of jobs at the <br /> <br />Johnson Space Center would be very damaging to the local economy, at <br /> <br />a time of severe economic difficulties in the Houston and Texas <br /> <br />economies; <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br /> <br />LA PORTE: <br /> <br />Section 1. That the City Council of the City of La Porte urges <br /> <br />NASA to reconsider any reorganization plan which would have the <br /> <br />effect of transferring jobs from the Johnson Space Center to the <br /> <br />Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, and that the space station <br /> <br />program be in all things retained at the Johnson Space Center, as <br /> <br />originally planned. <br /> <br />The City Secretary is directed to furnish copies of this Resolution <br /> <br />to officials of NASA, and members of Congress, as well as the President <br /> <br />and Vice President of the United States. <br />
