A RESOLUTION BY !rBE CI!rY COUNCIL OF !rBE CIn OF LA POR!rE, !rEDS, SUPPOR!rING !rBE
1972 BAN ON OCEAN DISPOSAL OF NUCLEAR WAS!rE.
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of La Porte, Texas, has the moral
obligation to ensure an environment which will enhance the quality of life for
all children and adults alike; and
WHEREAS, the United States Navy has a proposal to dispose of up to 100 defueled
decommissioned nuclear submarines during the next three decades; and
WHEREAS, one of the options is for ocean disposal of these submarines; and
WHEREAS, the oceans are a food source for much of the world's population and
contamination of the food chain could have far reaching implications;
NOW, !rBEREFORE BE I!r RESOLVED, the City Council of the City of La Porte, Texas,
should support the 1972 ban on all ocean dumping of nuclear wastes until it can
be demonstrated that the safety and efficiency of ocean disposal offers less harm
to human health and the environment than other practical alternative methods of
disposal.
