ORDINANCE NO. 98-1285-P
AN ORDINANCE DENDING ORDINANCE NO. 1285, RAN ORDINANCE
IMPLEMENTING POLICEMEN'S CIVIL SERVICE, ESTABLISHING
CLASSIFICATIONS, NlJKBER OF AUTHORIZED POSITIONS IN EACH
CLASSIFICATION, CONTAINING A SEVERABILITY CLAUSE, FINDING
COMPLIANCE WITH THE OPEN MEETINGS LAW, AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE
DATE HEREOFR.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE:
Section 1. Section 3 of Ordinance 1285-0 is hereby amended
and shall hereafter read as follows, to-wit:
"section 3. There are hereby established the following number
of authorized positions in each of the foregoing classifications,
to-wit:
CLASSIFICATION
NUMBER OF AUTHORIZED

Police Officer
Sergeant
Lieutenant
Assistant Chief

Section 2. Except as hereby specifically amended, Ordinance
No. 1285 and amendments thereto shall remain in full force and
effect.
Section 3. The City Council officially finds, determines,
recites, and declares that a sufficient written notice of the date,
hour, place and subject of this meeting of the City Council was
posted at a place convenient to the public at the City Hall of the
City for the time required by law preceding this meeting, as
required by the Open Meetings Law, Chapter 551, Texas Government
Code; and that this meeting has been open to the public as required
by law at all times during which this ordinance and the subject
matter thereof has been discussed, considered and formally acted
upon. The City Council further ratifies, approves and confirms
such written notice and the contents and posting thereof.

Section 4. This Ordinance shall take effect and be in force
as of October 1, 2004.

SUMMARY & RECOMMENDATION
City Ordinance 1285-0 needs to be amended in Section 3 to recognize the classifications and number of positions in
each classificatioIL In June 2000, Lt Gary Chastain returned to service as a Lieutenant and the position of a fifth
(51h) Lieutenant was authorized to bring the authorized positions form four to five Lieutenants.
In addition, a communications Sergeant's position was created and authorized by the City budget 2000-2001 which
was created effective October 1,2000. This brought the authorized total of Sergeants from nine (9) to ten (10).
The amendment to Ordinance 1285-0 established the current authorized Civil Service positions:
56 Police Officers
10 Sergeants
5 Lieutenants
1 Assistant Chief
Action Required bv Council:
Recommend City Council to approve the amendment of Ordinance 1285-0 to 1285-P to establish the current
authorized classifications in Civil Service.
